Phenomenal Women
By Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Homecoming Episodes 2, 3, and 4

Word Count: 360

Some of my first thoughts about Homecoming is that Heidi's boss, Collin, is a jerk. He seems to only care about himself and the initiative's goals (whatever they may be). He doesn't care about Heidi's professional opinions about the soldiers or even the soldiers' well-being. I definitely don't think Collin cares about actually helping the soldiers out mentally since he kicked Shrier (spelling?) out while he was struggling, and almost kicked Walter out. We find out that Heidi doesn't remember nearly anything about her job, Collin, or the soldiers from when she worked there, and that she had to try and ask her ex boyfriend about it (which she didn't even remember how long they dated). I'm starting to think that something traumatic had to have happened to her and/or one of the soldiers and she chooses to block all of those memories out. Maybe Collin is even the main reason for her quitting and not remembering. Her mother talks about her being depressed when she came back home, and if it was bad enough, it could have caused her to suppress those memories. I am skeptical of the soldier who comes in to Heidi's restaurant and requests her specifically in episode 4. I think he's lying about just getting back... I think he's been back for a while, and was possibly in the Homecoming Initiative, or he's friends with someone who was in it. For some reason, I think this man knows about the initiative and Heidi's job and is trying to get answers for whatever reason.

On another note, I like how I can hear certain background noises to make me feel like I'm actually there with the characters. Such as the bubbles from the fish tank in Heidi's office, or the classical music in the restaurant with Heidi and her ex, or the television in Heidi's mom's nursing room, the squeak of the door when opening/closing, or the customers talking in the background at the restaurant Heidi works at, and we can even hear the soda machine when she's filling the root beer up in the cup. I'm excited to hear what other background noises they use.

  1. Yes, you're very astute to notice that we've got many questions about why it is that Heidi can't remember her past--we have learned in previous episodes to trust her, so we don't spend too much time believing she would mislead us, which takes us down a different path...I am interested to see how you all react to the last two episodes. Think more about what you might be able to "steal" from a process point of view from these episodes for your own podcast.

  2. I liked what you posted about Homecoming. It was a series that got me addicted from the very first podcast. The twists and turns never seem to end. It's an awesome plot that many Rutgers students who have served in the military could possibly relate to. I couldn't resist listening to the second season. OMG what happens is mind blowing. I strongly urge you to listen to it is you get time.
